The Tarot Cards coming to life.

Niki de Saint Phalle was a French sculptor, painter and filmmaker. Apart from her marriage to the world renowned kinetic artist, Jean Tinguely, she will foremost be remembered  for the creation and construction of her masterpiece, The Tarot Garden, located in Garavicchio, Tuscany (Italy).

A visit to Gaudi’s Parc Güell in Barcelona deeply affected her and planted the idea to create her own monumental sculpture park.

This colossal work depicts the 22 Major Arcana of the Tarot cards. The sculptures have a steel soul covered by concrete with mirrors, colored glass, ceramics and found objects.

They are an expression of the artist’s life story and they contain the idea of a “small Eden where man and nature can meet.” The sculptures are not as much concerned with the fortune-telling aspect of the cards, but rather refer to the elements of life’s experiences and self-knowledge.

After nearly 20 years of work (and a considerable amount of money), the park opened in 1998.
